As you navigate your course towards better health, you probably are spending more time reading labels. But sometimes, when buying fresh fish or meat, for instance, there is no label and perhaps you assume, well, it’s just fish or meat. And just forget about reading a toothpaste label with all those weird words. Perhaps you’ve guessed the punch line already although this is not a joke. As a diet coach, looking out for pitfalls with food comes with the territory with Health Through Diet. It doesn’t take much research to find that fish sometimes is more than just fish…same thing with butcher cuts. So maybe it’s time to learn about some of those long words we skim over at times. Let’s consider “Sodium Tripolyphosphate.” Although it is annoyingly long as a word, it’s just good to know about so you can make informed choices.
Because we are in the habit of going to grocery stores for most of our foods rather than gardening, fishing at a local pond at sunrise, or managing our own chicken coops, we all have bought into what civilized society knows as the “food industrial complex…” Our food comes from all over the world now, and unless you have your own personal jet plane, you’re going to pay a price of some sort for “fresh” fish from the other side of the globe. That price could be a lab chemical designed to convince you that your fish is right off the boat when in truth, it just can’t be.
Sodium Tripolyphosphate is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a food preservative. It helps retain moisture. That helps products look good longer and keep selling weight higher. It is used in many other things, like detergent and antifreeze, for instance, and it’s in many cleaning products. Yummy.
No study shows that it causes cancer or is directly related to a specific disease. However, it is known to be a lung, skin and eye irritant but no one expects you to rub the powder on your skin or hang your nose over an open cask of it. The amounts allowed in food are highly regulated, according government articles, but we all must take this on faith. How many additives do you really want to ingest as you make steps toward better health when you begin to realize Sodium Tripolyphosphate is just one of many additives you’ll find in your food?
As a diet coach, the question Lisa from Health Through Diet tells people to to ask themselves is whether or not they can afford to ingest a manufactured additive that is a known skin irritant and used mainly to keep “unfresh” food looking good and weighing as much as possible so you can pay maximum price?
You do have choices. When buying scallops, for instance, ask for, “chemical free” “dry pack” or “day boat.” Always ask about additives and if you don’t get an answer you trust, you can always go to another market or make a different selection. With a world full of food, we do have options.
Perhaps one of the very healthiest choices you can make is to eat more simply, eat fresh, and to get back into your own driver’s seat about what you consume. It’s your call.
